Should DUI Convictions Stop You From Driving Your Car And Your Boat?
A recent opinion piece on the website Jacksonville.com called for drivers convicted of DUI to lose their privileges to operate a boat along with their car. The article stated that Florida leads the nation in boating accidents, injuries and fatalities but fails to say how many of those accidents were alcohol-related. The author says Florida is lagging behind other states in “common sense” and sites a new law passed in Louisiana which extends DUI penalties from land to the water.

The article makes many good points as to having boaters go through boater education courses and how these types of courses make waterways safer for everyone. There are tons of facts in the article about support for boater safety courses and how boaters under the age of 21, who are required to take such a course, have fewer accidents. The only facts that are not in this piece are any showing a link between DUI convictions and alcohol-related boating accidents. Pass a law requiring more safety education but don’t expand the law with no evidence to show it will receive a desired effect.
